Ask The Pastor

Q.
My uncle asked me if I knew the book of Thomas. That is not included in the English Bible. What is the book of Thomas?
A. The gospel of Thomas is not part of any Bible either Catholic or Protestant. It is one of the Nag Hammadi documents. It is basically a random collection of sayings attributed to Jesus and some of the disciples. Many scholars believe it to have been written about 100-150 A.D. There are, however, many similarities between the sayings of Jesus in the Gospel of Mark and the gospel of Thomas. Please remember that the gospel of Thomas is not recognized as a part of the Bible, therefore, it is not considered as divinely inspired. Our information was taken from an article written by Michael Bumbulis, "Is the Gospel of Thomas Reliable?" at http://www.answers.org/Bible/GospelOfThomas .
